The Tick was the first non-mainstream comic I ever read. This was back when The Tick animated series was at its heyday. So enamored was a friend of mine with the cartoon he made a concerted effort to track down the original Tick comics, created by Ben Edlund and published by New England Comics. When he completed his collection, a feat that took surprisingly little time, he lent me the issues. The animated show will always have a special place in the witty corner of my heart because it was my introduction to The Tick, but it was very obvious the comics were where the show's genius was spawned. Ben Edlund was a true visionary of the superhero parody genre. (The only other creator who comes close to standing alongside Edlund in this genre is Bob Burden, creator of Mysterymen and Flaming Carrot.)
